blood drunk. the only way to describe it. it’s soaking through the pores of his skin, festering on the tip of his tongue, coating everything in a rose tint of his own making. he should have opened his mouth sooner– as a human, he could go hours without eating even when he didn’t always want to. instead he waited, dreading the very ritual that has now become vital to his survival, and innocent lives paid the price. he knew their names, their children’s names, their favorite places to vacation. they had invited him into their home twice. a fatal mistake.

he wishes he couldn’t remember the act, but every second is vivid in his mind… the moment of shared regret in their eyes when they realize housing a new vampire is a death sentence. and he can still taste them, with every breath he draws in as the air dances along his tongue.

it takes a moment for hooded eyes to finally lift and acknowledge her presence. he’s unable to erase away the evidence on his face, the changed etched into his very flesh. but at least the ache in his gums is gone. it only took two lives to scratch that itch. “rebekah.” her name is an exhale, dull and stale, releasing the breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. “i couldn’t stop it. i couldn’t.”
