Asher had tried not to mention the Fireflies to Joshua. Mostly because he didn’t want the other to stress out about the fact they still were contacting him. Since the whole save Joshua mission things had been a mess. You put an original born vampire in a place where they had trapped somebody he cared about you ended up with a hell of a mess. Asher was an angry person and they knew it now. There was no touching of Joshua or Julia. He was honestly ready to whisk them both away somewhere else he had heard about but didn’t have the resources right now to do it. If he could then the three of them, four if he got Katherine to go, would be long gone.

“Yeah…” He said as he set the gun down. He can hear the other’s heartbeat and moves to his breathing, not wanting to fully listen. But he did need something to listen to when talking to the other. “Yeah… You guys did. But their issue is I don’t want to work with them anymore. The only reason I was for so long was because of you. You were my handler and somebody I care about deeply. When they betrayed my trust and kept you locked up is when they and I started to have issues. That and they don’t like that I killed their previous leaders after I found you.” He moved over to Joshua and kissed his cheek. “I don’t want to work with a group that has hurt somebody I care about.”

His heartbeat is still irregular with anxiety, but listening to Asher’s admission gave him something else to focus on. They had certainly come a long way from passing interactions in the District, coordinating the exchange of contraband and illicit information. Joshua’s beyond grateful for everything this man’s offered him, a soft smile finally breaking his expression when the other male’s lips graze his skin, his eyes closing in passing. But the truth is, everything changed when he left– and it’s his fault, more than Asher could know.

“Did I ever thank you, for saving me?” he asks quietly, gaze following to catch the vampire’s own. So many people had made it possible for him to come home, but the cost in the end had been too high. It weighs heavily on his conscious, almost as much as the sensory flashbacks that plague his mind. “The Fireflies are in shambles–” he knows this firsthand; the trip back to his lab the other day had been… eye-opening, to say the least. “–is there even any value in your cooperation with them?”
