He wished he could say something to him. Something that was light hearted or funny to make the growing tension lessen. But Asher didn’t have anything and it was getting harder for him to try. He didn’t know what to do at this rate. It was getting harder for him and he knew it. Ever since that first talk of honesty he didn’t know what else to say. He felt like things were easier when they could ignore what he was, before Joshua saw just how frightening he could be. And with the new Fireflies leaders breathing down his neck, pressuring him, he was having a harder time now saying things he should.

He looked up finally, meeting the other’s eyes. “I never mind when it comes to you.” He goes back to cleaning the gun, feeling frustrated with the dirty cloth. Setting it down he snapped his fingers and a new clean cloth appeared in his hand. Lately he had been practicing magic, having lost touch with it before the end of the world. He chuckled just a bit at his comment. “It helps me concentrate sometimes. With the new Fireflies leaders constantly down my back right now and now some outside people… Helps just a bit to try and sort thoughts. Pretty sure I’ve cleaned the same guns many times.” Reassembling the gun he moved over next to him he set the handgun on the rack. “That and it lets me sort out my thoughts to drive me mad later.”

Tension seized his shoulders at the mention of the Fireflies. The organization he once believed in more than anything had turned its back on him– at least as far as Joshua was concerned, anyways, they had. He’d barely survived making it back from that mission; if it hadn’t been for Allie, cutting half his arm off wouldn’t have mattered. To return home only to have your leaders seize him and lock him up like some lab rat, poking and prodding with needles- all but dissecting him- it did not do a whole lot to inspire confidence. Joshua hadn’t returned to their employment since, citing it as needing time to recover properly (all the while continuing his secret project through those he trusted). He was not naive enough to think that Asher wasn’t intervening on his behalf, but to hear just how insistent they’re being…. well, it was cause for concern.

“I didn’t realize the Fireflies were giving you a hard time…” he uttered cautiously, trying to control the damned beat of his heart, well aware of it betraying his anxiety to the vampire. He didn’t use to be like this, but now he was having a hard time catching his breath. “I thought your new handler and I had come to an understanding about how you operate.” He tilted his head to the side, trying to play it casual as he cracked the vertebra in his neck absently. “I can reach out to him…… pull some strings….” A shallow breath, which he tried to minimize as much as possible. “There’s not reason things should change just because I’m not their liaison anymore.”
